Aims of the project: The objective of this proposal is to develop pulsed, quasi-monochromatic, high-brightness soft X-ray sources based on two types of discharges - on 'the capillary discharge' (the driver is to be constructed) and on the discharge initiated along thin 'exploding fibre' (the same driver or experiments abroad). The gas filled capillary discharge is known fot its stability. A homogeneous pre-ionisation (by a few tens of Amperes of pre-breakdown current) and the fast current rise-time causes very rapid detachment of plasma column from capillary walls. In this way the number of plasma particles remains limited and even currents 20-40 kA succeed to heat the plasma to temperatures above 100 eV and generate a highly ionised atoms, which radiate very intensively in soft X-ray region. The plasma of exploding fibre is also very stable: it needs still lower compression than capillary discharge and it has a sufficient number of highly ionised particles in the discharge channel to generate high-brightnes
