Aims of the project: This project is focused on the interaction of hydrogen, deuterium and helium with candidate fusion materials. These will include tungsten (as prime plasma-facing material), low-activation steel (as main construction material and an alternative plasma-facing material) and ceramic coatings (permeation barriers). These will be prepared with a different state of microstructure and exposed to hydrogen isotopes by various methods, to provide a range of exposure conditions. Advanced analytical methods will be used to quantify the extent and character of hydrogen isotope intake, permeation and release. The main aim is to characterize the above phenomena and elucidate their kinetics and mechanisms, in relation to the initial material structure and exposure conditions, and the effects on the structure, properties and behavior in fusion-relevant conditions.
